At ARCO Ruth Schnell will be presented with LED-work’s
The gallery presented two ‘one-person’ shows, the first one in 1997, in the context of the opening of the new Kunsthaus Bregenz. Here Ruth Schnell picks up the thread of the above-mentioned considerations. A series of “Sketch-Pictures” which she developed for the installation in the Austrian pavilion in Venice 1995 functions in a sense as a link, was forming the overture in the first room of the exhibition. The core of the presentation, however, was formed by five new video installations. Common to all is that the “pictures” were projected onto white, lightly prepared trivial carrier bags – in each case, however in a different installational form.
In the second shown in 2004, which was entitled “L’ordre du regard”, she literally plays with the concept of visual perception. Her lustrous canvases are slit down the centre where a sequence of small flashing LED lights omit words related to various ways of seeing. The viewer has to play with the work to try and decipher the words which can never really be made out as they flash over the surface of the canvas.
Ruth Schnell lives as a freelance media artist in Vienna. Selected exhibitions and projects: 1990 Aperto – 44th.
