INSTALLATION – ZEICHNUNG – SKULPTUR
9. April – 14. Mai 2016

April 9 – May 14, 2016

After more than ten years of being far away from the art business Lisi Hämmerle now presents a glimpse into the work of the Swiss artist Spallo Kolb. His mediums of expression are myriad – sculpture, drawing, installation, architecture, archaeological experiment. His creative working meshes with the occupations of a farmer, metalworker, ceramicist, motorcyclist, businessman, builder and father. He is interested above all in the study of materials, physical processes, skills, tectonics. It is a focus that often eludes space and time – ingenuously he winds back 6.000 years of evolutionary history and fervently purses the question: “What is the origin of fire?”

Born in Appenzell in 1959, Kolb represents that rare archaic type of humans who are not willing to settle for data from a microprocessor. He wants to explore the world and its proportions, relationships, progressions and figure out for himself what they are all about. And he is not averse to heavy. Beyond the 0s, 1s and more 0s he creates forms from stone, iron, cement, wood, steel. He finds them, shapes them, condenses and changes them. This gives rise to a balance act: nature – man, matter – not matter, Hoher Kasten and shepherd. One sees the small in the large, and vice versa.

Galerie Lisi Hämmerle will also be undergoing one of these transformations. The exhibition space, where structure is now defined by columns, will soon become a flat plane, distraction gives way to concentration, a door turns into a sculpture – a cut shape. Wind, rain, corrosion leave their graphical marks on paper, are given a new life as a figure sealed within an airtight box. A parking space outside the gallery becomes an endless eight in steel. Cosmos instead of car, infinity on the pedestal. The imagined mountain of his childhood, inspired by vodka and caviar, guides heart and hand through two days and nights in the Vienna of the aging Qualtinger. Two dozen of drawings spring from the young and wild artist at the steel table he welded himself. Now thirty-five years later they are on display in the Petersburg hanging style in Bregenz. Works of bold intensity, comforting signs of human emotion in the chaos of increasing alienation. With a few works Spallo Kolb brings together that which elsewhere has shifted out of control.
